What is the Visual Resources Committee up to?

The VRC met on 3rd June at Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design. Here’s a summary of what was discussed.

One of our members has unfortunately (for us!) decided to take early retirement, so we are looking for a new recruit. The committee is currently considering potential new members.

After two very successful visits to the BBC Information & Archives in May ’08 and Jan ’09, we are looking into other venues with an image archive/library theme to offer ARLIS members in Jan/Feb ’10.

Following ACADI’s (Association of Curators of Art and Design Images) petition to DACS (Design and Artists Copyright Society) for the creation of a non-commercial scanning license, ARLIS has sent a letter expressing its support and stressing the urgency of this eagerly awaited license, backing ACADI’s sentiment.

The VRC has been talking to JISC Digital Media about the possible creation of a ‘jargon buster’ of terms relating to the digitisation of moving images – watch this space!

The committee has also been working on producing an online, updated version of Visual Resources for Design (originally published back in 1995): it is intended to be an international directory of image suppliers relating to the arts. Our current focus is on identifying those suppliers to be included.

On September 9th 2009, we will be running a joint event with the ARLIS Cataloguing & Classification Committee on cataloguing images. The event, entitled Picture This! the art of cataloguing images in the digital age will take place at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. A programme and booking form will be posted soon on the ARLIS/UK & Ireland website.

Wellcome Library to host Learning on Screen 2009

The Wellcome Library will be hosting the Learning on Screen conference 2009 at The Wellcome Collection, 7-8 April 2009.

The BUFVC are organising this conference, and have put forward a call for papers, with a submission deadline of 15 January 2009. This annual conference was established by the Society for Screen-Based Learning and focuses on the delivery of learning and research with moving image and sound – be it broadcasting, web delivery or cinema.

During the conference there will be opportunities to visit the Wellcome Collection’s spectacular permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Two key themes of the conference will be:

Disability and Access to Moving Image and Sound
Online Moving Image and Sound Services for Learning
